Clock time vs solar time
Civil time gives a whole region one clock. Longitude determines mean solar time. Their difference shifts the Sun's highest point away from 12:00.
Solar noon displacement
Color is calculated continuously from each timezone's UTC offset and every point's longitude.
Local clock reading
Inspired by Stefano Maggiolo's map. Timekeeping boundaries since 1970 come from timezone-boundary-builder, using OpenStreetMap data under ODbL. Seasonal and historical offsets use pinned IANA 2026c rules; recurring daylight-saving changes are excluded from official-history eras.
